Urban Decay’s Born To Run
eyeshadow palette review

If you had asked me this past spring to describe my perfect eyeshadow palette, I would 1000% say matte colors in various shades of rose golds and browns. But something recently came over me – suddenly I was craving color and shimmer. I was in a palette funk, and I needed something new.

A couple of weeks ago I was browsing YouTube and I saw a review of Urban Decay’s new Born to Run palette that a favorite beauty guru had received as PR. I knew this was the answer to my palette problems. Funny story (okay, not so funny but a story nonetheless) – I looked online and saw that it was being sold at Sephora. I went out literally that same day, super pumped/excited, but couldn’t find it anywhere. Turns out it was only online at that point and it wasn’t going to be in stores until two weeks later. So I was forced to wait. Awesome.

This palette features 21 shades, with a mix of mattes and shimmers. The idea is that this is supposed to be an all-in-one product you can take while traveling. One that will help you create a look for any occasion. From neutrals to jewel tones, to more colorful shades, you should be able to find some new favorites in this one palette.

The first thing you’ll notice about the product is that it has got some heft to it. Always a good first sign. If I’m spending good money on something I don’t want it to feel like it’s going to fall apart the first time I use it. The outside is decorated with various travel photos – lending to the vacation idea behind the collection. Inside you see the shades (obvs) and a super large mirror. Perfect for travel because you don’t have to pack an extra one.

The shades are absolutely gorgeous and there’s such a wide variety. I am currently obsessed with the lighter pink in the top row (Still Shot). But the purples and greens have also caught my eye – especially Hell Ride and Big Sky. This palette has 4.5 stars on Sephora so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that not only are these shades super pigmented and creamy, but they also blend like a dream.

One thing I really love about this is that there’s a beautiful black color located within the palette. I use black eyeshadow as eyeliner (applied with an angled liner brush) and there’s nothing more disappointing than having to remember to pack some black shadow because the palette you’re bringing doesn’t have the color. It’s always always a small disappointment when palettes don’t have this basic shade, so this was a small win for me.

On the opposite side, there are two (smallish) cons to this palette. The first is that it doesn’t come with a brush. I know, this seems so minor, but every other Urban Decay palette I’ve purchased has come with a brush and it’s nice knowing that you’ll always have one readily available. They advertised this collection as the ability to create any look, any time, anywhere. Wouldn’t a brush fit in perfectly?

The second con is the price. Granted this is a high-quality product and it does have a lot of shades, but $50 is a lot. And taking that $50 and throwing it towards eyeshadow. It’s hard, even for the most makeup obsessed person.

I see this palette as something new. Most brands seem stuck on board the bronze/rose gold train and it gets boring. Makeup is creative and you can only create so many looks with the same shade. If you’re looking for something fresh, go out and pick up Born to Run. You definitely won’t regret it!

  1. I’ve only seen a little about this palette and it looks gorgeous! Really like the mix of colours that you get, it is a bit expensive but I might need to save up! X

  2. this palette is so beautiful! i always love urban decay’s black eyeshadows. I did a eyeshadow review today and said the same thing that every brand is stuck in the same boring warm tone routine and nothing is standing out in the market. it’s nice that urban decay released this palette and that it is different then everything out right now! great review!
