I have a confession – before this summer, I’ve never worn shorts. When I was at my heaviest weight, I absolutely hated my legs. I would always wear jeans year round because I felt like they hid the things I didn’t like. Even now at a more normal weight, I have a love/hate relationship with my legs and therefore a love/hate relationship with shorts. But I decided that this would be the year I try and step out of my comfort zone. I’m tired of weird tan lines and dying of heat in the middle of July. It’s time to find some shorts that I actually like wearing.
A couple of things to note – currently I would say that I have a pear body shape. While I have a smaller upper body, I tend to carry most of my weight around my stomach and hips. Add that in with my longer torso and most shorts tend to hit me at my widest area and are tight around my upper legs.
Also, please keep in mind that everyone’s bodies are different and just because I might not like some things on me, does not mean that should discourage you.
After a disastrous and discouraging start with some jean shorts, I decided to actually look to the internet for some help. I found that people who have a pear shape should look for shorts that have a high rise, billow at the leg, and are made of a softer fabric. So basically those jean shorts are the exact opposite of what I should have been trying.
With this in mind, I’ve found two shorts (one I had to return due to a rip), a romper, and a bonus jumpsuit! All of these came from Torrid.
The first pair of shorts that I got are these amazing black shorts. They have a solid black lining and then over them is a pleated lacy floral design. This fabric helps give them a soft drape look while also feeling airy and cool. The top hits me right at my waist and the bottom is long enough to cover up my upper leg. Because they’re black, they tend to go with just about everything but my favorite pairing is a simple black tank.
The romper is all black with a beautiful floral design on it. Perfect for the weird end-of-July heat we’re currently having in June. It’s made of a lightweight jersey fabric with a v-neckline and spaghetti straps. Remembering what I read on the internet, this romper is perfect because it has a piece of elastic that gives me definition around my waist and then flows out into the shorts.
The last piece that I picked up was this jumpsuit. Guys – if you don’t own a jumpsuit please go out and buy one. I am not even kidding when I say that this jersey jumpsuit is literally one of the comfiest things I have ever worn. I love this particular style because not only does it have that much-needed definition at the waist but it then flows out over the waist before tapering at my legs. This shape helps hide my mid-section while highlighting smaller areas.
Every single person has parts of their body that they wish were just a tad different. But it’s important not to let that rule our lives. Whether you’re slim, athletic, pear-shaped, or curvy, there’s clothing out there that will make you feel and look amazing. For me, it’s probably never going to be jean shorts. But that’s okay! I’ll gladly stick with my jumpsuit.
