A while back Tarte was having a special sale where you could get six full-size products and a makeup bag for only $63. Included in these products would be your choice of (select) foundation, concealer, eye product, blush or highlighter, mascara, lip product, and a bag to hold them all in. Considering all of the products I got usually retail over $150, I jumped at my chance to try some new makeup!
There were three different bag designs you could choose from and I went with the mermaid design. Let me just say that I am very very happy with this product. I’ve traveled a bit with it and not only did it hold up great but it actually carries a lot of products. Plus it’s made very well. It doesn’t feel cheap or like it could fall apart at any moment. Two thumbs up!
For my base, I ended up grabbing the Shape Tape Hydrating Foundation. They were also offering the Matte foundation but those were totally out of my shade by the time I put in my order. While this foundation has four stars on their website, it does not work for me. Like at all. The first time I put it on, it clung to dry areas of my skin and looked incredibly patchy and uneven. The second time I used it, I made sure to 100% properly moisturize and exfoliate beforehand and I got the exact same results! Definitely a no go. Also, this has large doe foot applicator that I find awkward to use.
I was disappointed that Tarte’s Shape Tape wasn’t an option for the concealer but I get it. Why would they make it part of the special deal when they know people will just pay full price for it? Business wise, it doesn’t make a lot of sense. The concealer I did end up with is their Aquacealer. This is supposed to be a lightweight, medium coverage, buildable concealer. Just like the foundation, this concealer has great reviews on their website but just does not work for me.
First off, it’s not anywhere near enough coverage for me. It’s so runny that I feel like it gets soaked back up into the sponge when I use my Beauty Blender. When you compare it to the Radiant Creamer Concealer by Nars, you can see a huge texture difference (thick and creamy vs thin and runny). On another note, it comes in a huge bottle. I love concealer because you can just throw it in your bag or purse and easily touch up throughout the day if needed. Definitely not happening with this.
Lately, I’ve really been drawn to metallic eyeshadows so I was super excited to see this eyeshadow as an option. I was a bit nervous because metallic shadows are very dependent on the formula. Some look amazingly pigmented in their pot and then you go to put them on and you get nothing. While others transfer beautifully. I am happy to announce that the formula for this shadow is just lovely. I got my brush a little wet to help the shadow a bit but the copper color looks amazing on the eye and will make any look just pop. I’m a huge palette fan so I don’t know if I would have picked this out on my own, so very happy that this was one of the options.
For my mascara I went with their Lights, Camera, Lashes 4-in-1 mascara. I’m not going to say much about this. We all know it’s great. We all know it does amazing things to your lashes. It’s not my number one out of all the mascaras in the world but definitely top five.
After the eyeshadow, this Drench Lip Splash lipstick was probably the thing I was looking forward to trying the most. Let me start off by saying that the color is beautiful and that it applies very nicely to the lips. Beyond that, there’s definitely a couple of pros and cons to their advertised matte coverage. Since this isn’t a liquid lipstick, you’re able to get that beautiful finish without it being super drying to your lips (which is a problem often associated with matte lipsticks).
But because it doesn’t dry down the same, it transfers. Really easily. Somehow this lipstick manages to make its way to my chin every single time I wear it. To the point that my fiance is now on constant watch whenever I put it on. I would rather have to deal with dry lips than worry about my lipstick moving around my face. Will I still wear it? Yes. Am I going to always reach for it whenever I’m doing my makeup routine? No.
This finally brings us to the highlighter. The highlight of my purchase. Just kidding, but I had to make the joke. I honestly think that beauty gurus have ruined me when it comes to highlighter. Like I have become that person that when they put it on, they need to be literally glowing. I’m talking Fenty beauty, I’m talking Kandee Johnson Candy Glow. While this highlighter is gorgeous and perfect for a subtle moment, I just need that extra pop. Luckily this is buildable. It takes a little patience, but you’ll get there.
I love makeup and I love trying new things so I definitely do not regret this purchase. While these products might not be my new absolute favorites, I’ll definitely continue to reach for them and to play around with them. Highly recommend the mascara and eyeshadow. The highlighter would be a great gift for somebody starting out. The lipstick is beautiful but be on the lookout. The foundation and concealer are eh, but that could totally be my skin type.
